This article explains how to use @mentions in Testmo and how in-app and email notifications work for assignments and mentions. It covers how to tag teammates in rich text fields, how to manage notifications in the notification tray and profile view, and how to configure notification preferences — both as an individual user and as an administrator.
Mentioning users
You can mention any project member in a rich text field by typing @. Mentions alert the recipient with an in-app notification and — depending on settings — an email, making it easy to draw a teammate's attention to a specific comment or note.
Adding a mention
Mentions are available in any Testmo rich text field — including test case comments, run notes, session log notes, milestone notes, and document notes.
- Click into any rich text field. If the field supports mentions, you will see a Type @ to mention hint in the toolbar or placeholder area.
- Type @ — or click the @ button in the editor toolbar — to open the mention popover.
- A list of project members appears in alphabetical order. Begin typing a name to filter the list in real time.
- Select a user using the arrow keys and Enter, or click directly on their name.
- Repeat to add further mentions in the same field. You can mention multiple users in a single rich text field.
Viewing and managing mentions
While you are editing, mentions appear as styled chips inside the text field so you can easily distinguish them from regular text. Once saved, they render as visual labels.
- Hover over a mention label to see the user's avatar, display name, and email address.
- Remove a mention while editing by clicking the × on the chip. No confirmation is required.
- Your own mentions are highlighted differently from mentions of other users, so you can quickly spot where you have been tagged.
In-app notifications
Testmo shows notifications for two events: when you are assigned to a test case or run, and when someone mentions you in a comment or note. Notifications appear in two places — the notification tray in the menu bar, and the full notifications view in your profile.
Notification tray
A badge in the menu bar shows your total count of unread notifications. The badge is hidden when there are no unread items.
Click the bell icon to open the notification tray. Each entry shows a summary of the notification — hover over any item to see the complete text in a tooltip. Click a notification to navigate directly to the relevant item in Testmo.
To focus on mentions only, enable the Mentions slider at the top of the tray. The tray will show only mention notifications while the slider is on. Disable it to return to the full list. The slider state persists if you refresh the page, but resets to off when you start a new session.
Profile notifications
For a full history of your notifications, go to My Profile → Notifications. The view is organised into three tabs:
- All — shows all assignment and mention notifications in one list. This is the default tab.
- Assigned — shows only notifications where you were assigned to a test case or run.
- Mentions — shows only notifications where someone mentioned you.
Within any tab, you can enable the Show unread only toggle to hide already-read notifications. The toggle is off by default and resets to off in new sessions.
To mark individual notifications as read or unread, use the controls on each notification entry. The unread badge in the menu bar updates immediately.
Hover over any notification to see the full text in a tooltip. Click a notification to navigate directly to the mention or assignment.
Email notifications
When someone mentions you in Testmo, you can receive an email notification in addition to the in-app alert. Mention emails are sent separately from other Testmo emails, and each one includes a direct link to the exact location where you were mentioned.
Click the link in the email to open Testmo and navigate straight to the comment, note, or field that contains the mention — no searching required.
Notification settings
User settings
To configure your own mention email preferences, go to My Profile → Settings and find the Notifications section. You can choose how — and whether — you receive emails when someone mentions you. Your personal preference takes priority over the admin-configured default.
Admin settings
Administrators can configure the global default for mention notifications across the entire Testmo instance. Go to Administration → Settings and look for the Notifications section. Changes take effect immediately and apply to all users who have not set a personal preference.
When adding a new user to Testmo, the mention notification preference is also available on the Add User screen, so you can configure it at the point of invitation.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Which fields support @mentions?
A: Any Testmo rich text field supports mentions — this includes test case comments, run notes, session log notes, milestone notes, and document notes. A "Type @ to mention" indicator is shown when a field supports this feature.
Q: Who can I mention?
A: You can mention any user who is a member of the current project. Testmo-wide users who are not part of the project will not appear in the mention list.
Q: Will a user receive a notification for every mention?
A: In-app notifications are always generated when a user is mentioned. Whether an email is also sent depends on the user's personal notification settings and the global admin default.
Q: Can I mention the same user more than once in a field?
A: Yes — you can mention the same user multiple times and mention multiple different users within a single rich text field.
Q: Why does the Mentions slider reset when I open a new session?
A: The Mentions slider in the notification tray (and the Show unread only toggle in profile notifications) persist across page refreshes within a session, but reset to their default off state when a new session starts. This ensures a clean default view for each session.
Q: Can I turn off mention emails entirely?
A: Yes — go to My Profile → Settings and update your mention notification preference. If your organisation requires a specific setting, contact your Testmo administrator.
